Samsung's Galaxy S6, S6 Edge launched

Samsung on Sunday launched two new flagship devices the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge in an attempt to bounce back into contention in a market that has been so far dominated by Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

With all the rumours and leaks, there was nothing surprising about the Samsung announcement, except for the official images and some detailed specs.
Features such as the introduction of wireless charging, curved edges on both sides, 16MP rear camera and its new payment system - the Samsung Pay - have all been doing the rounds over the past month.
For Samsung itself the success of the S6 series is crucial as it aims to regain its market share lost to both Apple and competing Chinese manufactures.
The hallmark of the new announcement is the S6 Edge, which comes with a sleek metallic and glass design with curved edges on both sides.

Samsung published this video on YouTube, highlighting some of the features of the new devices.

As JK Shin, CEO of Samsung Electronics pointed out during the announcement, the design elements were built from scratch in an operation dubbed ‘Project Zero’.

The device will retain the same size as that of the S5 with a 5.1-inch screen and will be powered by 64-bit ARM processor.

While Samsung has introduced the finger print scanner, it has removed the option of expandable memory.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will be available globally starting from April 10, 2015 with 32/64/128GB storage options

Samsung also introduced the new payment mechanism and called it Samsung Pay.
The move was widely anticipated ever since Samsung announced the acquisition of Loop Pay last month.

It is widely expected that Samsung would roll out the feature across the globe starting in the US and Korea during the third quarter, thereby overtaking Apple.
Samsung has already announced its partnership with MasterCard and said it is in the process of finalising deals with similar companies.
Both, the S5 and the S6 edge, will come in three common colours - White Pearl, Black Sapphire and Gold Platinum, While the S6 will have its own exclusive Blue Topaz shade, the edge will have an additional Green Emerald version as well.

Top five features of the new Galaxy S6 devices

Design

Built of metal and glass, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge moves away from its predecessors` plastic mould.

Samsung first introduced the curved display on one side on the Note Edge last year.
It has now expanded the feature on both ends through the Galaxy S6 edge.
According to the company the body is made from made from Corning Gorilla Glass 4 – considered the toughest glass to date.

Camera

Samsung has retained the 16MP lens on its rear camera disappointing some who were looking for a bigger 20MP feature.
However, Samsung notes both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge come with F1.9 lenses and high resolution sensors that can capture superior image quality, even in the dark.
In addition, it is equipped with auto real-time High Dynamic Range (HDR), smart Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and IR Detect White Balance. Samsung also points out a new ‘Quick Launch’ feature gives users fast, direct access to the camera from any screen in just 0.7 seconds by double clicking the home key button.

Wireless charging

Samsung has embedded WPC and PMA certified wireless charging technology into both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.
The devices work with any wireless pad available in the market that supports WPC and PMA standards.
When it comes to wired charging Samsung notes that it charges 1.5 times faster than the Galaxy S5, providing about 4 hours of usage after only 10 minutes of charging.

Latest technology

According to Samsung both devices are slim and lightweight and can be considered as the most powerful in the market today. While the S6 is 6.8 mm thin the edge is slightly thicker at 7.0mm.
But the edge is lighter at 132g while the S6 weighs 138g.
The devices feature the world’s first 14nm mobile processor with 64-bit platform, new LPDDR4 memory system and UFS 2.0 flash memory, which the company notes provides higher performance and enhanced memory speed with lower power consumption.
Both, the S6 and S6 edge, has a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED screen with a pixel density of 577ppi.

Samsung Pay

The device is protected by Samsung KNOX, fingerprint scanning, and tokenisation and the payment system works with both Near Field Communication (NFC) and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology.
